Traffic fine in Portugal with a hire car or an overseas address

If you live abroad, you can receive a Portuguese notice for an offence committed in Portugal. With a hire car, check whether you received an official notice, a handling charge from the rental company or both.

What to check in your case

Check the registration, time of the alleged offence, authorised drivers and return time. A rental company’s handling charge alone does not establish that the official fine has been paid. Keep the envelope delivered abroad so the date of service can be assessed. A defence under Article 175 must be written in Portuguese. You may explain your circumstances to our office in Portuguese, English or French.

Documents for your defence

Full notice or decision, front and back, and evidence of the date of service.

  • Rental agreement and collection and return records
  • Rental company’s invoice, message and charge description
  • Official notice and envelope, including the address used
