Tolls, tax and other fines

CP train fines for missing or invalid tickets in Portugal

A ticket for a different train, class or route can lead to a notice even if you have paid. Identify the service you took, as the fine range varies between urban routes and certain regional or long-distance services.

What to check in your case

If you could not buy a ticket at the station, document which sales facilities were available there and nearby. Where onboard purchase is permitted, CP requires you to approach the conductor before or immediately after boarding and before taking a seat. For app purchases, compare the issue time, booked train and time of inspection. An initial written defence can be filed with CP within 15 working days after service.

Documents for your defence

Full notice or decision, front and back, and evidence of the date of service.

  • CP notice, service, train number and stations of departure and arrival
  • Ticket, booking, payment receipt or error message
  • Ticket machine fault report or purchase attempt and contact with the conductor
